Some special visitors to the carnival this year will be hoping for fine weather as they do battle on Silloth Green
John Hope has been Chairman of the Silloth carnival committee for the last six years. He is a man that knows what goes into making a good event and this years carnival looks like being a day to remember.
Anyone for a spot of camel racing on Silloth Green? Over ten thousand people are expected to attend the carnival which takes place on August 25th, Bank Holiday Monday to witness the camels in action.
The day hasn't forsaken its more traditional highlights, kicking off at 11am with the Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling event held on the green. Fletchers Fun Fair, stalls, a carnival procession, Dearham Brass Band and Barrow Pipe Band will all entertain visitors in traditional fashion but it is probably wise to keep an eye out for some more surprises on the day.
John seems to have a keen sense of what makes a carnival memorable so don't be surprised if Elvis chooses Silloth as the venue for his international comeback.
John said in a confidential tone, "I heard about this bloke. Steve Las Vegas I think his name was. Anyway, he's a local Elvis impersonator. Very good by all accounts. and I thought why not? Let's get him down to Silloth."
You have to admire the Chairman for his style. If you're in the area this Bank Holiday, the carnival promises to be a day to remember.
