PRIMARY school pupils in Silloth spent a creative day at the town’s secondary school in a bid to boost participation in the arts.
Solway Technology College came alive with the sound of music last week as it hosted an arts day for 40 year six primary children.
The youngsters took part in dance, drama art and music workshops centred around the theme of the elements of water, wind, earth and fire.
Creative enrichment co-ordinator at Solway, Gillian Scholey, said: “Whirling flames of ribbon, word sculptures, the construction of primitive shelters, a chance to make and record their own musical compositions and even an encounter with The Simpsons meant that there was something for everyone.
“We already do maths, science, technology and PE days for primary students, but we felt that we also wanted to work with our primary schools to develop the creative side of the children.
“We were really impressed by the enthusiasm and energy of the pupils.”
Mrs Scholey added that hosting activities for primary pupils helps smooth the transition to secondary school.
She said: “We had some fantastic year nine students assisting with the running of the day and many of the primary children commented on how helpful and friendly our older students were.
“This means that much of the fear element of starting secondary school is broken down before the children start at our school.”
